Chinese Lessons

A few weeks ago the girls started Chinese lessons. They are only for one hour on Sunday afternoons so I wasn't sure how much they were really learning but I think the exposure to the language is starting to sink in. Alot of the kids in the class have obviously taken Chinese before and seem pretty comfortable with it, but both Maggie and Ellie seemed very confused and quiet during the first few classes. But the teacher is really good about trying to make it fun and interesting. They are not just setting at a desk repeating sounds. They are playing word games that have them up and moving and running around the classroom. That is their favorite part.

Last night I heard them singing the Chinese song to each other...they sounded soooooo "Chinese!" We have started reading the Usborne book "First Thousand Words In Chinese" after class to help us remember what they have learned that day and also at night before they go to bed. I don't want to pressure them to learn the language but I believe learning Chinese is a way for them to honor their home country and ancestry and make them better global citizens.
